site reliability engineer

Site Reliability Engineer

Hi and welcome to our job post,

We have an exciting opportunity for a Site Reliability Engineer to join our team! We are expanding our EdTech scaleup Bijles Aan Huis/Lernigo…

let us dive right into it….

About the company:

We're a promising tech-savvy startup-moving-into-scaleup that created a tutoring marketplace in the Netherlands and have recently expanded to Germany. We have a fully remote team with people all over the world. It's working, we're growing fast, we've got excellent backing, and there are some very exciting times ahead for us. 🚀💪

Our mission is to help as many students as possible get the most out of their education, through accessible high-quality at home and online tuition. We do this by building an accessible high-quality product, with which we can solve the problems of a student in today’s world with, unfortunately, an inadequate educational system. In our product, the tutor and technology play a central role, and we’re constantly seeking new ways to help our students.

We're about 2.5 years old and launched our first product over a year ago. Ever since the launch, we have seen explosive growth in the number of students, tutors, and revenue. This growth resulted in more funding which allowed us to hire more talent to help us build a better product and accelerate our growth (like with the expansion to Germany). Our team has grown from 5 people about a year ago, to over 20 people today and we are continuing hiring to expand our team.

What we offer:

  • ✅ 100% remote, work where you want!
  • ✅ Have an impact on the lives of thousands of students
  • ✅ Long term work (not project-based)
  • ✅ Flexible working hours so you can plan your own working hours (around some core working hours)
  • ✅ Work in a diverse and inclusive team with multiple nationalities
  • ✅ The chance to join us from the early stages and be part of an exciting and rapid growth journey
  • ✅ Learning opportunities through constant new challenges
  • ✅ Fast career growth opportunities
  • ✅ Full inclusion in exciting projects and social team building activities. Become a part of a diverse and fun team!

Our challenge:

With any explosive growth, there becomes the need to expand the team. Our development team currently has two front-end engineers and three back-end engineers. The team is led by our CTO who has set up most of the automation and infrastructure for the development and operation of our website. As our website evolves, we want to share knowledge and adopt best practices in this domain, so we are looking for an expert to complement the team with greater focus on this area, but also have exposure to the backend development.

We are currently migrating our application from a PHP monolith to microservices in Golang with an Angular frontend and we face an increased complexity for the development, the delivery and the deployment of our applications in Amazon Web Services (AWS). To solve these problems, we are asking ourselves questions around tough topics such as design, communication and data partitioning. We have already started and successfully implemented our first few microservices, and together with new learnings we uncover new challenges along the way. To improve the usability of the infrastructure by the development team, we aim for effectiveness and simplicity and in order for us to achieve this we are looking for an expert to complement the team with greater focus on this area. This role will also have exposure to the backend development to ensure that we utilize the benefit of AWS within our microservices.

About the role:

  • We are looking for an engineer who can take ownership of our infrastructure for development and operation
  • You will be a core part of our development team
  • You will be responsible for following best practices and proactively focus on stability and maintainability
  • You will help us research, identify and pick the best technologies available for the problem at hand
  • Working full-time on an ongoing contract (at least 30 hours per week)
  • You will have flexibility to choose your own hours around default team meetings and core working hours 10am-2pm Monday/Wednesday/Thursday/Friday (CEST) and 10am to 5pm on Tuesdays (CEST)
  • You can work from anywhere you want!

Who we think would be a good match (but feel free to convince us otherwise):

Being a fully remote team, we care deeply about having a healthy working environment that is pleasant for everybody. For this reason, we consider the following soft skills equally important to the required technical skills:

  • Independent self-motivated
  • Self-organizing and self-learning
  • Someone who loves to take ownership and responsibility
  • Creative, innovative and solution-oriented
  • Comfortable working in distributed teams: eager to collaborate and (seek) help
  • Open to talk about and learn from failures
  • Has a passion for smaller high-growth companies, with a very dynamic and fast-changing environment

Requirements for this role:

  • A proven track record of ownership of a project, making use of Infrastructure as Code for deploying microservices in AWS is essential for this position
  • Experience in ReST back-end services development in any language
  • Experience in Golang and message-based communication will be a plus

For information, our tech stack includes:

  • Infrastructure as Code (CloudFormation)
  • Elastic Container Service (ECS)
  • SQS/SNS
  • CloudFront
  • RDS
  • Redis
  • Drone.io for CI/CD
  • GitHub

Join our team! 🙌

Do you feel that you would be a good fit for our team? Do you want to join us and be part of our exciting journey?
